New? What you need to know

New to yoga?

Like anything new, committing and even starting,

can feel uncomfortable. Usually because we

like being good at things. As we get older,

we become less inclined to think we'll be

any good - so we avoid altogether

Avoiding isn't doing the trick though, is it?

I'm a trained Life Coach and within coaching

there's a great saying

... 'Stop Should-ing All Over Yourself'.

I hear people saying 'I should practice Yoga'

but I'm too stiff.

Can I politely tell you that

this is one of the reasons WHY we practice

yoga ... literally because we're too stiff.

There's a particular posture in Yoga called

Paschimottanasana, also known as

Caterpillar in a Yin practice. It's a seated forward bend.

Much of yoga is centred around this pose

and it's the one pose that many beginners

find challenging. However, this

pose is the position we were in, when we were

in utero. (Before we were born).

This pose alone takes us slowly but surely

towards our bendy selves - actually reversing

the years of our physical selves.

Now - we can just get down on the floor and

do that one pose - and it'll definitely help,

but there's so much more to enjoy

What you need to know before yo start ...

We never get where we want to be, in Yoga,

so it doesn't matter how long we practice,

there is always a place to go. I believe this is

a great thing as it's something we can grow into,

rather than grow out of.

(Wonderful as we get older, as so many

sports become more and more restrictive).

It's low cost. Memberships with me are low,

and once you've purchased a mat and a couple

of blocks - you're good to go.

....You may want a bolster over time

 but cushions work

There's always something to learn within

Yoga too, about ourselves.

It's like a clever 'self study' that works off the matt

as well as on the mat.

 It's like we're coaching ourselves

 ...and it works.

One thing is for sure, and that is, there

will always be someone who is 'better'

physically than both of us, at Yoga asanas.

You see, Yoga isn't about being

the best, or in fact being competitive at all.

Practicing yoga is about being the best version

of ourselves, in this moment. There are days

when I can do a particular posture and it

feels easy, other days the same posture

 feels challenging.

So we're constantly being challenged

 to accept, which for me,

has become a great gift.

Yoga reflects life.

It's a very clever science that supports us -

starting with a physical practice.

And that's something we're unaware of

when we first begin.

There are two forms of yoga

A Yin Practice

which is soft and gently

and floppy

and a Yang practice

 which is physical and hot

A Yang practice branches off into all sorts

of physically demanding classes to include

 Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Hatha, Bikram,

Dynamic Flows and Smooth Flows
